Contemporary art meets industrial design: Paolo Nicolai

Recycled materials and aesthetics inspired by the classics of antiquity: Paolo Nicolai is the artist who interprets the new permanence of objects over time.

Visiting BI.CI. showroom you may encounter the heads of Athena and children's faces. But they are not a decorative element of classic art, but surprising objects of contemporary art. In collaboration with Il Forte Arte, BI.CI. has selected some of Paolo Nicolai’s works  to interpret the contemporary home as a container of beauty, in all its forms.

From the land of marble to the recycling of materials

Paolo Nicolai was born in Carrara, in the heart of artistic Tuscany, a land of marble and innovation breathed over the centuries. His degree in Architecture allows him to study different forms of visual art, and to be influenced by industrial design.

Plastic is his chosen material, the new marble, the metaphor of what will survive us, just as classical forms have come down to us through the centuries.

He says about his work "The materials I use are all recycled, shredded, shredded, pulverized and mixed together with the color: these are mainly disposable object in POLYPROPYLENE, sea sand, 3D printer waste, abandoned or lost toys, caps and lids in POLYETHYLENE, marble processing waste (from the resin process of the blocks, from the cutting with diamond wire, from the transport, from the polishing), bottles for detergent in HDPE, bottles and containers in PET, processed in EVA foam, barnacles from rock.

The influences of Damien Hirst and Igor Mitoraj blend with the forms of classical Greek and Roman sculpture. And they give life to works of surprising beauty, in which colors and  pop materials are transformed into impeccable harmony

Plastic like ancient marble: the metaphor of permanence

Nicolai's passion for plastic stems from the awareness of how versatile and surprising these materials are: he uses them as if they were the new bronze, imagining them as the material that will survive us over the centuries. The metaphor of the new permanence: like the Greek marbles that have come down to us from classical times, these heads, these forms, will cross the years to be rediscovered in a post-modern future.

Art and design, a new home concept

In the BI.CI. Nicolai's works are gracefully placed on furniture with a rigorous aesthetic, on natural materials, in a creative contrast and surprising harmony.

The idea is to demonstrate how furniture is an expression of creativity and the concept of beauty tout court. The new homes should express personality and style not only in the décor, but also in the objects that each client is free to choose according to his personal taste.
