Feng Shui and design: well-being in our homes

What is Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy that seeks balance and harmony between the individual and the elements of his or her living space. This practice emphasizes physical and mental health as well as the relationship between success and health, which are achieved through a positive energy flow.

Adopting the principles of Feng Shui is a recognized technique for increasing well-being in our homes. Feng Shui translates as "wind" and "water": the principles are based on balancing energy levels and promoting positive energy.

The appropriate use of color, light, space and the objects or furniture layout can help build harmony levels, improving the flow of energy. Interior designers appreciate the actual impact these factors have on what is known as the "feel" or the atmosphere of each room.

Materials and colors of Feng Shui

The five founding elements of Feng Shui are wood, metal, earth, water and fire.
Wood symbolizes growth and vitality. Placing wooden objects in your space encourages personal growth. Plants and wooden furniture are easy ways to include this element.

Metal symbolizes intelligence. One way to add this element to your space is by using frames or metal sculptures.

The earth is a symbol of stability and balance. The earth element can be brought inside the house by adding rocks, crystals and landscape images.

Water symbolizes wisdom and serenity. Mirrors, reflective surfaces and aquariums are ideal for adding the element "water" to your space.

Fire embodies passion and energy, it represents transformation and volatility. Candles and red colored objects are the ideal furnishing accessories.

When decorating your home, inserting hints of different colors is a great way to add depth and personality. That's why the more soothing colors work well in bedrooms and the more vibrant shades suit the busiest rooms like the kitchen and dining room. A tip for choosing colours is to use harmonious tints complementary to each other.

Some examples:

  • Yellow and Red: Adding earthy shades from the yellow palette to the fiery red tones is a good way to calm the intense energies that the red emanates. The best rooms: Living rooms or kitchens.
  • Green and Blue: Both calming colors with shades of wood and aqua, creating a vibrant space without the energy of fire. The best rooms: bedroom or bathroom.
  • Blue and Purple: This combination with earth and water tones conveys calm and relaxation to a room and represents prosperity and wisdom. The best rooms: living room or work space.

How to apply Feng Shui in furniture

The most important principle of Feng Shui is balance. A space cannot be 100% perfect, it can only have a good balance, created specifically for those who live in that same environment.

It is imperative that the house is designed with a symmetrical or asymmetrical balance. The external architecture should facilitate the growth of natural elements, without hindering the environment. Feng Shui emphasizes the importance of increasing as many natural energy forces as possible to maintain the balance of Yin and Yang in a house.

To create positive energy in the rooms layout, it is better to get rid of all sloping structures. The inclinations tend to attract total chaos, according to the principles of "chi" and Feng Shui. This is not due to any superstitious beliefs, but rather to the danger posed by tilted structures.

In the bedroom, it is best not to put the bed in front of a door or window. Ideally it should be placed in the center, where it does not directly overlook any of the exteriors. This concept also applies to the living room, where the seating area shouldn't look directly into any doors or windows. Crystal balls can be placed in the center of the room to absorb any negative energies and push the dynamism of the positive ones.
