The skilful play of light: contemporary choices for a design home

New design proposals enhance rooms and enhance volumes.

Evocative, functional, emotional: light permeates our lives dictating its rhythms and influencing our perceptions. It is through light that we perceive volumes and objects, making it the fundamental element of any architectural work. The home, the heart of our activities, is made alive and dynamic by the sun's rays permeating windows and openings. Or ignited to new possibilities by artificial lighting.

Natural light: the power of the sun

Soft and continuous, natural light bursts into rooms, creating a visual bridge between inside and outside, transmitting all the power of the sun and its beneficial effects. When designing a home, sun exposure is an important element, enhanced today by architectural choices that facilitate the entry of rays into every room.

Natural light is a source of physical and mental wellbeing, improves mood, and ignites physiological mechanisms beneficial to our health. But our life does not always take place during daylight hours: we need artificial elements that allow us to inhabit spaces at all times.

Lighting and design: creativity in the service of beauty

Contemporary design is defined by a human-centred approach to the concept of lighting: lights are read as materials processed to achieve high visual comfort. Luminous bodies tend to disappear, to cancel themselves aesthetically to give relevance to the abstract element, which is the real protagonist of the space.

Light and airy, the proposals of recent years have reduced the thickness of the supports by tiptoeing into homes and common spaces: the use of LEDs or solutions integrated into the architecture facilitate this task.

Iconic solutions: the Flos proposals

Innovative for over 50 years, Flos is one of the leading companies on the contemporary design scene. Its products are icons of beauty, designed by masters and new talents whose style is appreciated and rewarded.

Linked to the Flos name are lamps whose shapes have gone down in history: Arco, the famous floor lamp designed by the Castiglioni brothers in 1962, is still one of the most representative pieces of contemporary design furniture and one of the most coveted and best-selling objects in history thanks to its simple, rigorous lines and timeless style. Compasso d'Oro in 1979, Parentesi is another piece that made history: an ingenious lamp consisting of a profile that slides on a steel cable hooked to the ceiling and held taut by a weight placed at the lower end. And then Taccia, a highly innovative lamp in which the light source is concealed in the base to avoid direct glare.

Architecture and technology

With the beginning of the new millennium and the revolution of LED technology, designers have changed the trendy aesthetic canons, moving towards a conceptual essentiality. There are many examples: we can cite Coordinates designed by Michael Anastassiades, in which modularity and Cartesian axes give life to pure, geometric forms. Or Wireline, designed by Formafantasma as a minimal and ethereal suspension lamp, composed of a lighting tube and coloured rubber bands.

Davide Groppi's creative research gives life to an essential collection, with a poetic and abstract conception of light. His research led him in 2018 to the creation of the Endless system, designed under the banner of maximum freedom: an adhesive strip, a conductor tape that can be applied to any surface (walls, ceilings, but also stairs, furniture, windows and glass), transforming it into an electronic circuit where light can be placed. An easy solution to fit into our homes, where beauty and design come together under the sign of minimalism.
